A Foot In Coldwater - often abbreviated as AFIC - formed in 1972 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Vocalist Alex Machin and guitarist Paul Naumann (previously a member of Leather) came from the band Island, while bassist Hugh Leggat, drummer Danny Taylor (previously a member of D.T. & The Phantoms from 1964-1965) and keyboardist Bob Horne (all three previously members of The Lords Of London from 1965-1968), all became members of Nucleus. After Greg Fitzpatrick, John Richardson (previously a member of The Twilights from 1963-1964) and Ron Corrigan departed Nucleus, the band changed their name to A Foot In Coldwater in 1972. The band’s name, a quirky piece of British slang meaning that - if you get your foot in cold water, you’re in a lot a trouble – was coined by Frank Davies of Daffodil Records, who they signed with. Frank Davies produced the first CanCon single (cultural and creative content that is Canadian in nature) ever released – “Oh What A Feeling” by Crowbar in 1971. Blending hard rock, progressive, and melodic balladry, AFIC developed a sound that was both punchy and emotive. Their self-titled debut album, “A Foot In Coldwater”, debuted in 1972. Their breakout single, “(Make Me Do) Anything You Want”, became a Canadian hit. The follow-up album “The Second Foot In Coldwater” came out in 1973, with singles “(Isn’t Love Unkind) In My Life” and “Love Is Coming” with further chart presence. In 1974 they released “All Around Us”, featuring “Midnight Lady” and a shorter, renewed version of “(Make Me Do) Anything You Want”, which again made the Canadian charts. Bob Horne left the group in the mid 1970s. In 1977, AFIC signed with Anthem Records (same label as Rush and Max Webster) and released their final studio effort, “Breaking Through”. The album embraced a more polished AOR (Album Oriented Rock) production but failed to gain commercial traction, leading to the band's dissolution later that year. In 1984, the band Helix released a cover version of “(Make Me Do) Anything You Want”. A Foot In Coldwater regrouped briefly in 1988 for short tours and reunited occasionally over the following decade. In 1998, the Unidisc label reissued their first three albums and released a two-disc compilation, “The Best of A Foot In Coldwater”. “(Make Me Do) Anything You Want” was later honoured with induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019. A Foot In Coldwater were a fiercely creative and musically capable band whose blend of rock, progressive, and melody earned them a devoted Canadian following. Though their career was hampered by label instability and shifting trends, their legacy endures through their standout single, their ambitious catalog, and their influence on the rock acts that followed.
