Alvin Stardust was an English pop and rock singer best known for his brooding glam-rock image and a string of hit singles in the 1970s. Born Bernard William Jewry on 27 September 1942 in London, England, he became one of Britain’s most distinctive pop stars, recognised for his leather-clad look, moody stage presence, and deep, dramatic vocals. Jewry began his music career in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His first major success came when he took over as lead singer of Shane Fenton & The Fentones following the death of the original frontman. Under this name, he scored UK hits such as “Cindy’s Birthday” (1962) and “It’s All Over Now” (1962), gaining early chart recognition but struggling to sustain long-term fame as Shane Fenton. In 1973, Peter Shelley created the persona of Alvin Stardust – writing and producing the first single “My Coo Ca Choo". However, Shelley had no interest in performing live or making public appearances. Shelley continued as songwriter and producer and reinvented Bernard Jewry as Alvin Stardust, adopting a darker, more mysterious persona that aligned perfectly with the glam-rock movement of the era. The transformation proved decisive. Jewry recorded a run of successful singles including “Jealous Mind”, “You You You”, “Red Dress”, and “Pretend”, many of which showcased his blend of rock & roll attitude and polished pop songwriting. Throughout the 1970s, Stardust became a familiar face on British television and a reliable chart presence. While his commercial success declined in the 1980s, he remained active as a performer and recording artist, later enjoying renewed appreciation through nostalgia tours and appearances. Alvin Stardust continued performing into his later years, demonstrating his enduring passion for music. Remembered as a master of reinvention, he holds a lasting place in British pop history as an artist who successfully bridged early rock & roll, glam rock, and pop.
