Juicy Lucy was a British blues rock band formed in 1969, known for their gritty sound, hard-edged blues, and a touch of psychedelia. They emerged during a vibrant period for British rock, carving a niche with their distinctive slide guitar work and powerful, swampy style. The band was formed by former The Misunderstood steel guitarist Glenn Ross Campbell and vocalist Ray Owen. Their self-titled debut album “Juicy Lucy” (1969) was well received, featuring a mix of blues rock, progressive elements, and standout slide guitar work. They quickly rose to prominence with their cover of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?", which became a Top 20 hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1970. After their debut album, Juicy Lucy underwent numerous lineup changes over the years, with notable musicians such as Micky Moody (later of Whitesnake) joining the group. Despite a lack of sustained commercial success, the band developed a cult following and released several more albums in the early 1970s, including “Lie Back & Enjoy It” (1970 – featuring the UK hit single “Pretty Woman”) and “Get a Whiff a This” (1971). The group disbanded in 1972 but experienced a few revivals in later decades, often centered around original member Ray Owen. These reincarnations kept the band’s legacy alive, blending classic blues roots with modern interpretations. Juicy Lucy remains a respected name in the history of British blues rock - a band that may not have achieved the fame of some of their contemporaries but left a lasting impression with their raw energy and unmistakable sound.
