The Open Mind was a British psychedelic rock band active primarily in the late 1960s, known for their heavy, fuzz-drenched sound and their cult-classic 1969 self-titled album. Emerging from the vibrant London music scene, the group originally formed in 1963 as The Apaches, later transitioning to The Drag Set (releasing the single “Day & Night” b/w (backed with) “Get Out Of My Way” in 1967) before settling on The Open Mind. The band consisted of: Terry Martin aka Terry Schindler (guitar, vocals), Mike Bran aka Mike Brancaccio (lead guitar, piano), Timothy Du Feu (bass), and Philip Fox (drums). Influenced by the burgeoning psychedelic and early hard rock movements, The Open Mind developed a sound characterized by swirling guitar riffs, haunting organ lines, and lyrical themes reflecting the mind-expanding ethos of the time. Their most well-known track, "Magic Potion" b/w “Cast A Spell”, released as a single in 1969, is considered a garage-psych masterpiece and has been featured on numerous psychedelic rock compilations. Although they only released one studio album – “The Open Mind” (1969) on Philips Records - it has since become a collector's item and a favourite among psych rock aficionados for its raw energy and proto-metal leanings. Despite a lack of commercial success during their active years, The Open Mind’s music has endured, influencing later generations of psychedelic and stoner rock bands. Today, The Open Mind is remembered as one of the hidden gems of the UK psychedelic era, representing the darker, heavier edge of the genre just as it began to evolve into hard rock and early heavy metal.
